Years ago divorced women were considered a social pariah. Someone to either be stoned to death or taken to the edge of the village. Loose women who are unscrupulously after married men. (Not as if said married men don’t actively participate but I digress) These days being divorced has taken on a new tone. True. In some social circles, when someone gets divorced the circle closes and squeezes the divorcee out. Then again, when you are not part of a couple why do couply things? It is ridiculous. 50% of first marriages end in divorce and 67% of second marriages end in divorce, soo yeah.. Lots of divorced people running around. Hard to treat all these women like the Scarlet Harlot since they are everywhere.
When you get married, the thought of divorce should never be in the back of your mind. I suppose I am different. It was in the VERY front of mine. When I said “I Do”, I knew it wasn’t going to be the last time I said this phrase. I’ve always known my first marriage would end in divorce.
I suppose knowing that my first marriage would fail, lessened the pain of divorce. A very close friend of mine is also getting divorced and her journey is far different than mine. She cried when she left him. I cried at the thought of staying with him. His actions hurt her emotionally. I was just annoyed. I never took his BS personally as I knew it was him not me who was crazy. I would have left even faster however; due to being financially tied together I couldn’t get away.
Where am I now? Happily building the life I wanted to have but was restrained from obtaining. Luckily I am not suffering from the negative emotional ramifications of divorce. My self-esteem is not shaken at all. I don’t feel like a stigma is attached to me NOR do I feel like another failed statistic. I feel like a pearl. A beautiful baroque pearl. Layer upon beautiful layer, which ends in a magnificent patina. I glow. I shine. I have luster all of my own. I am lovely in my imperfection.
I am not going to use this post to trash my ex. I’ve done it enough. It is out of my system. HE is out of my system. My spirit has gotten to a place where I can thank him for all the experiences we went through together. I am a stronger more clever person. I have learned patience. I have learned humility. But one thing I didn’t learn, I am NOT damaged because I am divorced. Instead I am fortified.

Wedding and engagement rings are so wonderful. They bring you joy, pride, and a sense of belonging.. That is... If you are happily married. The MOMENT you decide the marriage is not for you, or get divorced.. The rings are.. Basically worthless. Diamonds are a girl's best friend, however on the resale market.. They can be as big of a disappointment as the failed marriage. Almost but not quite. Hours were spent scouring jewelry stores for the most perfect rings. I can remember the day clearly when my friend, my ex, and I found my Ritani "endless love" engagement ring and matching eternity wedding band. It was love at first sight. Strangely enough I did not have the same reaction when I first met my ex. That should have been clue enough but I digress... So. Here were are. Years later. My 3.60 karats worth of platinum set best friends are worthless to me. I never wear the rings. NEVER. As much as I like ice, I keep them locked away in the safe. The only time they see the light of day is when I want to punk someone OR I go shopping at Sacks or Nordstrom and want good service. Other than that.. I have no desire to wear my former besties.

The economy sucks! Pawn shops are overrun with diamonds. People are unloading their assets left and right for the cold hard cash. This puts ex wives at a disadvantage. The value of their rings has dropped faster than R. Allen Stanford's list of close friends. I would rather hold on to my worthless rings than pawn them for a fraction of what they are truly worth.

In a perfect world, all ex wives could take their rings and magically convert them into something they really want. If I had a magic wand, I would turn my Ritani rings into David Yurman beauties! That way I wouldn't be screwed over twice (literally and figuratively). I would actually get at least ONE thing out of this Ponzi Scheme of a marriage that doesn't piss me off.

I have checked all sorts of websites for ways to unload my rings and none have met to my satisfaction of a good solution. Rings are not selling as fast as you would think they should considering the prices are akin to fire sale frenzy. The websites do have catchy names like;
I feel for the people who have posted rings on this site. We are all in the same boat. Sucky economy stuck with our assets frozen.

So. Major changes are taking place in my life. I have spent the past 4 years being a wife, babysitter, accountant, personal assistant, driver, scullery maid, personal shopper, healer, doctor, cook, psychologist to the insane, fixer of all problems big and small and a myriad of other duties and titles which would take me eternity and one day to list. I have basically been Bree Van de Camp, with a little less OCD involved. Luckily this woman is a fictional character because I have no idea how she keeps the facade of perfection up for so many years. I broke under the yoke. Being the perfect wife is not easy. Especially when you do NOT have the perfect husband. But I digress. Moving towards my new life I am excited about the opportunity to reinvent myself. I am shedding the chrysalis of housewife for that of one which excites me beyond belief....

WORKING WOMAN! These degrees need to start working for me since I worked so hard to procure them. So. Although the job market is rather tough, I managed to find employment that seems (for now) like my dream job. I will be doing something which I feel is important. I am working with teen girls at a treatment facility, in hopes of assisting them in getting their lives back on track. Will I skip to work everyday? Most likely not. I am realistic.
My life trajectory has never taken long stints in places where it has no business being. In contrast, these girls have made poor decisions which have removed their lives from the desirable path. It is now my metier to guide these young ladies to stability. Role reversal. I am shaking up my life to help them steady theirs. I'm enthusiastic. I'm apprehensive. Most of all I am dedicated to these girls I have yet to meet. I am sure we are going to learn so much from each other. I have wonderful childhood stories of a stable household with overly loving parents. I can't wait to hear their experiences then build a bridge which we can meet daily and connect with one another.

I love these girls already. I know there are going to be days which I could do without them, but hopefully those will be few and far between. See, through these girls I am gaining freedom from the mundane. Freedom from insignificance. Freedom from existing rather than LIVING and MAKING A DIFFERENCE.

Does life imitate art or does art imitate life? To me the truth to this adage is somewhere between the two concepts. We have always been taught that although life contains adversity, eventually we all will obtain our happy ending. Is that really so? Do we all elicit a happy ending?
I can relate to Sex in the City, just like most of the women in the universe. Each of the characters is an archetype of almost every woman I know. Some women are combinations of characters, and some are just carbon copies.

We are all pretty well acquainted with Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda. Their story lines made me laugh, cry, as well as stand up and cheer for what seems like all of my adult life. During my 20's I was so much like Samantha exploring my sexuality with absolutely no apologies. I didn't seek validation from a relationship and gathered some serious skills in the sack during this journey. Now that I am older, I see that I am hands down.. Charlotte York.

Charlotte and I are romantic optimists with traditional values, however just worldly enough to know when to relax our views. Her "rules" of dating are eerily close to my own and our predilection towards preppy chic as well as the color pink make us kindred spirits.

Just like me, Charlotte believed in her "Knight in shining armor". She thought if she worked hard enough, followed the rules, and did all the right things, she would have her happy ending. Well, it didn't quite work out like that. Her first marriage was a disaster. A total and complete catastrophe. Furnished with a shriveled up old harpie Mother in Law from Hell who could suck the life out of a corpse. (boy can I relate). On paper, the man she married was perfect for her. She had the wedding of her dreams, the ring of her dreams, the apartment of her dreams, and the husband of her nightmares. To outsiders they had the most magical life together. Unfortunately, it wasn't so. Charlotte's failed marriage rocked her to the core because it forced her to take off rose colored glasses. Life isn't as intelligible as fairy tales would like for you to conceive it is. Sometimes hard work and sacrifice earns you... MORE hard work and MORE sacrifice. Charlotte didn't let these lessons deter her. She decided to work towards her happy ending. The man she was least attracted to became just the husband she desired and deserved. So in the spirit of Charlotte York, I am going to work towards my happy ending. Hopefully, I won't have to change my religion. I really like bacon.

Dear G. I know you will never read this and believe me this is more for me than it will ever be for you. I was a possession of yours. One of the expensive things you liked to collect just to brag that you owned but never took the time or energy towards its up keep. I refuse to blame you for your neglect. It is completely my fault. I let it be ok. I let your behavior become common place . You teach people how to treat you. The lesson I gave you was one of which I am much stronger than I truly am. I let it be alright that I solved each and every problem, issue, crisis, and obstacle presented us. My job was to be the most perfect I could be. Not to let you see me sweat. I can do anything without help and with ease. I MADE it look effortless. Well it was NOT. I sheltered you from each and every storm our entire relationship. You were given the gift of the absence of misery. I sheltered this burden with a serene smile. That was entirely my fault. Once the cracks started materializing in my demeanor, I let you ignore them as you capriciously enjoyed your life. I let you Joy Luck Club me, let you devalue me. For that I was wrong. Let me regress to the beginning of the end. The end of me started with the origination of us. From the start I allowed you to make me feel I was not good enough, smart enough, thin enough, mannered enough, classy enough for you. This culture of always over achieving to please you was concocted from day one. I always felt I had to prove I was worthy of you. In reality, you were never worthy of me. I was more than you had ever had on so many levels. Your way of controlling me was to make me feel worthless. I was and am better than you will ever be. To make yourself feel BIG you made me feel small. I gave up things important to me to focus on things important to you. When you left the first time, I continued on with my life. Happy. So many wonderful experiences happened while you were gone. Then you returned. I LET you back in. Nobody takes the garbage out, then misses it and decides to return the rotting smelling mess back into the house. I did. I should have let my garbage remain on the curb for collection. You were so broken. It pulled at my heartstrings. I pieced you back together emotionally and financially. This was all done at my expense. I thought if I gave you what you needed, you would give me what I needed. You are selfish. I know this. I KNEW this. I still waited patiently. You showed me who you were the first time and I didn't pay attention. I saw what I WANTED to see. I hoped that out of friendship passion would spontaneously cultivate. There was never passion between us. The soil was not fertile in many ways. Over the years, you became more and more dependent on my competency. Over the years I became more and more drained by your dependence on me. WHY did I do everything? To impress you at first. Then out of necessity. You were more than happy to be the child, and I was a resentful mother. It was my fault for taking on all of the responsibility then being pissed you got to have all of the fun. I handed you pieces of me everyday to be discarded like used wrapping paper. There was nothing left. Not even the lovely bow which attracted you so much in the beginning. It was then that I realized you were killing me and I let you. To save myself, I had to kill us. I'm scared. We have been we for so long. But we killed me. We killed parts of you too. It is better this way G and I hope one day you will understand. For now I will take your hostility and your bitterness as I have learned to shoulder each and every burden you place before me with grace. But one day I hope you understand, I loved you. A warm friendship love which turned into resentment then hate. You hurt me, you destroyed me, but the phoenix is now triumphantly fleeing the ashes of her former life with wisdom way beyond her years.
